Resumo(s)

The present thesis aims at the construction of a paradigm of the artístic creation tbrough the confrontation of Art and Ethics. It is understood that Art does not emerge conditioned by Etbics however a bond exists that compels to consider this relation as a dilemma. This reflection points to the re-examination of human values and concepts of modernity of Enlightenment tradition such as, autonomy, reason, and emancipatíon. An attempt to extract original themes and instruments of analysis is done through two works, "The Portrait" by Nikolai Gogol and "Old Masters" by .Thomas Bernhard which hás painting for reference. Gogol appears as the anticipation of a feeling of rupture, in spite of bis yeaming for a conciliating art; the failure of this aspiration hastened by the innovation that bis works reveal, interpreting the world under the form of fragmented and heteróclito images. The importance of fragment and detail is emphasized, together with the humour and satirical style more effective in revealing moral values than the traditional representation. The gogolian aesthetics is deepened through a retrospective analysis having recourse to Nietzsche. Some of Gogol themes, brought into contemporaneity, are retaken in the works of Thomas Bemhard., for which also contributed the historic-political context. The denial of the description/imitation and the art of detail gain a more precise sense with the analysis of Thomas Bernhard's "Old Masters", which presumes the clarification of the ethics inherent to creation, enabling to rewrite the autonomy of the artist. Bernhard's prose favours furtherniore a disassembling well noticeable in the profíle of the "criticai artist" in "Old Masters". Só the viabüity of the creation requires a critical space, a man's dwelling, an êthos, vital support of the artist against the emerging new doubts
