A presente dissertação de tese de mestrado foi elaborada com o intuito de
conhecer a realidade de uma coleção, especificamente numa biblioteca da
Rede Nacional de Bibliotecas Públicas, investigando todo o contexto que
influencia a sua gestão e o seu desenvolvimento, os seus desafios e as suas
limitações, através de um estudo de caso. Centrou-se a investigação na coleção
da Biblioteca Municipal da Lourinhã, por então exercer funções profissionais
nesta instituição e desta forma poder beneficiá-la com uma ferramenta que
permitisse o seu desenvolvimento e a auxiliasse num processo de boas práticas
na gestão da sua coleção.
O estudo incide sobre a coleção geral, mas também sobre as coleções especiais
ou patrimoniais e ainda sobre o setor da coleção de estudos locais, conhecido
também por Fundo Local.
São apresentadas todas as potencialidades e as fraquezas encontradas na
coleção e tentou-se encontrar respostas e propostas para a sua melhoria.
O trabalho tentou ainda, caraterizar a organização tutelar no desenvolvimento
ou subdesenvolvimento da coleção, através da análise do investimento
realizado ao longo tempo nos diversos recursos que uma biblioteca necessita
para ser bem-sucedida e cumprir os objetivos expostos no Manifesto da
IFLA/UNESCO para as bibliotecas públicas. Foi através de questionários,
observação direta, da análise de dados secundários diversos, que fomos
recolhendo informação indispensável para realizarmos um balanço crítico e
desenvolvermos um conjunto de sugestões de melhoria.
Destaca-se a necessidade da importância de uma política que inclua um plano
de gestão e desenvolvimento da coleção, processo que deve ser inclusivo, que
envolva a equipa da biblioteca, os decisores e a comunidade que serve.
O estudo revela ainda que a coleção não é reconhecida pela importância da sua
qualidade intrínseca, mas pela grandeza da quantidade de materiais.
These master`s dissertation has been formulated to know the reality of a public library collection, specifically one from Public Libraries National Network (RNBP). The study investigates the context that influence his management and development, also all their challenges and constraints, using the methodology of case study. The research focus on the collection of Public Library of Lourinhã, because in that time I had responsibilities in their management, and it is important the research both to me but also, to the organization (the library), because is a tool that help them development their collection, introducing good practices and new ways of collection management and assessment. The research is about of the general collection, as well the special collections and the local studies collection, that is also known as local collection. All the weaknesses and capacities that we saw searching the collection are shown, and we try to find proper answers and proposals necessary to improvements. This work tried to show the importance of the main organization (the local council) helping the development or the underdevelopment of the collection. we did it, examining their investment in resources over the years, that the library needs to be successful and meet the objectives that are affirmed in IFLA/UNESCO Manifesto of Public Libraries. We used surveys, direct observation, data analysis of secondary sources, to collect data to do a critical balance and develop a range of improvement suggestions. The needed of a policy that includes a management and development plan of the collection its necessary, but also introducing a process that involves the staff, the stakeholders and community. This research shows that the quality in a collection is not yet important, but the quantity is still.
