O Projeto Final de Mestrado ocorre em Setúbal, uma cidade costeira de Portugal. Assim como outras cidades costeiras, Setúbal passou por um processo de industrialização, resultando em uma desconexão entre a cidade e o Estuário do Sado. Atualmente, algumas partes de frente ribeirinha encontram-se fragmentadas e degradadas, tornando-se um ponto focal de atenção e exploração deste projeto.
Diante da crescente ênfase na sustentabilidade em transformações das frentes ribeirinhas e das preocupações ambientais em torno do Estuário do Sado, o projeto proposto tem como objetivo estabelecer um Centro de Investigação e Preservação do Estuário do Sado em Setúbal. Através do conceito “Designing with the Waterfront”, abrangendo arquitetura, urbanismo e consciência ambiental, o Centro procura aproximar as pessoas à água, promovendo uma conexão mais profunda com o ecossistema do estuário e incentivando práticas sustentáveis.
Ao priorizar o espaço público, o Centro busca criar um ambiente acolhedor que estimula uma exploração e interação social. Por meio da integração dentro do projeto arquitetónico, a criação de um espaço dinâmico não apenas facilita o objetivo do Centro, mas também enriquece o tecido urbano como um todo.
Dessa forma, a frente ribeirinha de Setúbal surge com uma imagem renovada, posicionando-se para o desenvolvimento futuro e abraçando valores transformadores. Abordando as necessidades contemporâneas, cria-se um espaço para mudança e crescimento.
The Final Master Degree Project is set in Setúbal, a coastal city of Portugal. Similar to other coastal cities, Setúbal has experienced industrialisation, resulting in a disconnection between the city and the Estuary of Sado. Currently, certain parts of its waterfront exhibit a lack of cohesive design, making it a focal point of this project’s attention and exploration. Given the growing emphasis on sustainability in waterfront transformations and the environmental concerns surrounding the Estuary of Sado, the proposed project aims to establish a Marine Research and Preservation Centre. Through the concept of “Designing with the Waterfront”, encompassing architecture, urban planning and environmental awareness, the Centre strives to bring people closer to the water, fostering a deeper connection with the estuary’s ecosystem and promoting sustainable practices. By prioritising the public space, the Centre seeks to foster a welcoming environment that encourages community engagement, interaction and exploration. Through the integration within the architectural project, the creation of a vibrant place not only facilitates the Centre’s mission but also enriches the overall urban fabric. In this way, the Setúbal waterfront emerges with a renewed image, positioning itself for future development and embracing transformative values. With a forward-looking perspective that addresses contemporary needs, it creates a space for change and progress.
