A marital separation, as a process of transition in the life cycle of individuals, implies a reorganization of the family system, which involves changes in the roles and relationships among its members. The quality of coparental relationship is recognized as being instrumental in family functioning after marital separation, and needs negotiation of new relational boundaries between parents. The aim of this study is to describe and analyze the nature of the coparental relationship of separated/divorced parents evaluating different dimensions of this relationship, as well as how the boundaries of the relationship between them are established. Data were collected through online questionnaires, in a sample of 55 separated / divorced individuals. The results reveal that a coparental relationship marked by cooperation between parents is crucial in family functioning after the marital separation. The distinction of parental issues from marital ones appears as determinant in establishing clear boundaries between the former spouses, because the ambiguity of boundaries can compromise the development of the cooperative relationship between the parents. The renegotiation of relational boundaries between separated / divorced parents is a critical task to a successful separation / divorce. There are presented some implications for clinical practice and suggestions for future research.
