Chronic diseases account for a large part of mortality and premature mortality in European countries, having a significant impact on both households and healthcare services. Most of these diseases can be avoided or at least not aggravated, by a change in lifestyle and it’s, therefore, essential to encourage people to change their behaviour. It is in this context that this work project is based on. The present work is part of the Train4Health research project whose objective is to design and develop pedagogical tools that allow future health professionals to acquire knowledge and skills. One of the pedagogical tools is a simulation software, SimSoft 2.0, which allows students to learn and train with concrete cases and virtual patients. This document describes the design and development of the SimSoft 2.0. The SimSoft 2.0 is a Web application which aims to improve the capacities of students from various health areas in supporting behavioral change in the self-care of chronic diseases to their future patients. To achieve this, this application is based on a simulation of a conversation between a health professional (user) and his patient (virtual characters), and makes use of behavioral change techniques, feedback, debriefing and gamification. To prove the adaptability to other contexts of the solution, another Web application was developed with a role reversal, the virtual character plays the role of an assistant, and the user is a person with a chronic disease, diabetes. This application fits into another FCT-funded research project, VASelfCare. The Train4Health project (2019-1-PT01-KA203-061389) is funded by the European Erasmus+ Agency and has an international multidisciplinary team involving seven institutions (Faculdade de Ciências e Faculdade de Farmácia da Universidade de Lisboa, Instituto Politécnico de Santarém, Inholland University of Applied Sciences, Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, European Students Union e University of Maribor).pt_PT
