Resumo(s)
This paper presents new information on the vowel u in Portuguese central-southern dialects, which can be defined, from a dialectal point of view, as the area's most important vowel. The data come from AVOC - Atlas Acústico do Vocalismo Tónico Português = Acoustic Atlas of Portuguese Stressed Vowels. This new information demands that traditional ideas on the above-mentioned vowel be revised. This fact has decisive consequences on the classification of Portuguese central-southern dialects, and is taken as a paradigmatic case of the need of a new methodological approach to the study of Portuguese dialects.
