A presente dissertação consiste numa introdução, tradução e notas de comentário às cartas escritas a Páris nas Heroides de Ovídio: uma das heróides simples, a de Enone a Páris, e uma das epístolas duplas, a de Helena a Páris. Na introdução faz-se uma súmula dos principais problemas colocados pela obra, desde a sua datação até à autenticidade de algumas das cartas que compõem a colectânea. Discutem-se as possíveis fontes do poeta para o tratamento dos mitos daquelas duas heroínas (pouco se sabe de Enone e do seu passado pré-ovidiano e muito se sabe sobre Helena e o seu passado anterior a Ovídio). Depois, analisa-se a personalidade das protagonistas e as modificações que sofreram em relação à tradição pré-ovidiana. Apresenta-se ainda um resumo da carta de Páris, para facilitar a leitura tanto da carta de Helena como da de Enone. Nas notas de comentário, abordam-se problemas de interpretação, discute-se a relação das cartas com a tradição literária greco-latina, esclarecem-se questões de mitologia e geografia. Expomos ainda os principais problemas de crítica textual, dando ênfase às dificuldades de leitura e de fixação do texto de alguns passos. Chama-se ainda a atenção para as relações que Ovídio estabelece entre as três cartas (Enone e Helena a Páris, Páris a Helena). A secção final, dedicada à bibliografia, encontra-se dividida em quatro partes: (1) edições críticas, traduções e comentários às Heroides; (2) estudos das Heroides; (3) outras obras; (4) instrumenta.
This dissertation consists of an introduction and an annotated translation of the letters addressed to Paris in Ovid’s Heroides: one of the single Heroides (Oenone to Paris), and one of the double letters (Helen to Paris). The controversies raised by this work are briefly presented in the introduction: from its dating to the authenticity of some of the letters in the collection and Ovid’s possible sources for the re-writing of the two heroines’ myths (in contrast to Helen, little is known of Oenone and her pre-Ovidian past). Further analysis looks at the protagonists’ personalities and their changes throughout the letters in relation to the pre-Ovidian tradition. In addition, a summary of the letter from Paris to Helen is provided to facilitate the reading of the letters from both Helen and Oenone to Paris. In the notes several points are raised: the potential problems with the interpretation of this work, the relationship between the letters and Graeco-Roman literature, as well as general questions regarding mythology and geography. There is also discussion of the main textual problems, emphasizing the difficulties of reading and establishing parts of the text. Attention is paid to the links between the letters of Oenone, Helen to Paris, and Paris to Helen. The bibliography is divided into four sections: 1. Critical editions, translations and commentaries to the Heroides; 2. studies on the Heroides; 3. other works; 4. instrumenta.
