The term compersion is used to describe the feeling of pleasure people may experience in response to their partners’ intimate, sexual or romantic involvements with others outside the relationship. Regarding literature on compersion, there are no studies carried out with Portuguese samples and a lack of focus on young adults. The present investigation aimed to overcome this gap and aimed to understand the experience of compersion in consensual non monogamous relationships in young Portuguese adults. For this, individual semi-structured interviews were carried out with 14 participants aged between 19 and 26 years old. After a thematic analysis process, seven central themes were identified: Instrumentalization System, Empathy Management, Partner Relationship Management, Relationship with Metamour, Practice in Consensual Non-Monogamous Relationships, Personal Sphere and Emotional Ideal. Compersion experience was described as feelings of happiness, enthusiasm, curiosity, sexual activation and relief, with facilitators and barriers highlighted for them at different levels, such as individual, relationship with partner, relationship with metamour and partner’s relationship with matamour. Furthermore, it was found a relation between compersion and emotions considered negative in response to extradyadic involvements and their co-existence was reported. Taking this into account, it was suggested that more knowledge about compersion can help in the development of strategies to deal with emotions considered negative in response to extradyadic involvements, but also contribute to the understanding of relational well-being regardless of the relational structure or identity involved.
