ABSTRACT: Nowadays we have to deal with constantly growing amounts of information, available to everybody at an increasing speed by an amazing evolution of technology. We might not even notice the way all this information is carefully presented through selected typographic elements, to communicate easily and successfully. Although designers and other professionals master the use of typography to improve communication, we realized most people have a lack of this type of knowledge, and this not only limits their understanding of incoming messages but also diminishes their ability to take advantage of the communication performance. Having realized that school does not provide us with this kind of typographic knowledge, and if we have had it on childhood the advantages would be remarkable, we intend, with the present study, to find a solution that helps correcting this deficiency. By researching some available reviews on this issue and through exploratory search (interviews), we’ve managed to understand children’s cognitive skills and teaching methods and learning processes and analyze the development stages to find out thecorrect timing to provide children this typographic knowledge. We then found that the correct target group should consist of 10 – 12 year old children. We have developed and tested an easy and attractive teaching tool, a book that can be a very good help when teaching children the secrets and advantages of using typography, so they may get benefits during their educational process and along their personal and professional life. By testing the book on a selected sample of children, we´ve realized how gratifying it was to verify, eventually, that our effort in finding answers to our questions was successful: in fact, it is possible and useful to teach basic typography to children between 10 and 12 years of age; interesting and amusing teaching tools that they can use to learn are adequate and motivating; they enjoy, and they recognize the long-lasting value of what they have learned for their present and future.
