The relationship between the UK and the EU has been a tumultuous one, with consistent ideological differences having an ultimate effect on the relationship. This thesis will therefore assess the impact of Brexit on the EU and UK anti-money laundering regulations through analysing the post-Brexit changes to the frameworks. The foremost section will provide a mise-en-scène by assisting in the understanding of what Brexit is, the importance of AML regulation, and what the relationship consisted of prior to Brexit. The second section will develop on this, delving deeper into the numerous directives and legislative instruments that the respective
frameworks comprise of. The impact of Brexit will then be explored with a comprehensive evaluation of the changes to the UK’s AML regulatory landscape and its alignment, or more pertinently, divergence from the EU’s framework. Special mention is given to the development of regulation of third country branches, and how this will be of great effect for the neighbouring financial powerhouses. Finally, the identification of similarities, differences, and the overall impact of Brexit on the effectiveness of AML measures will be assessed.
