Considering the picturebook as a way children can connect and identify with the world, the concepts of child and childhood are addressed as well as their relationship with topics considered sensitive. Through the dialogue between image and word in the context of the contemporary portuguese picturebook, and with a focus on the theme of war, the works A Guerra and Daqui Ninguém Passa! are analyzed. The mechanisms, languages, and codes through which the authors of the works relate to children's imagination are noted. The authours represent war and depict a new, different, and sometimes hostile world, seducing the reader and encouraging reading. After a brief historical and pedagogical framework of the picturebook and its context in the european and portuguese context, the definition, morphology, characteristics, and possible readings of a picturebook are considered, through the analysis of textual, graphic and editorial elements. Due to the uniqueness of its symbolic and suggestive composition, the two case studies are analyzed, questioning the imagery of war in representation. Various perspectives for future research are expressed, with reflections on literacy, the internationalization of the picturebook and the current state of the art. In summary, the picturebook is considered as an object where the theme of war, approached graphically and textually in different ways in these two case studies, allows for the introduction of complex issues into a child's universe of concepts, that they do not yet have the capacity to decode alone.
