A importância da colaboração entre o artista e o conservador - restaurador : o problema da obsolescência

The production of Contemporary Art has brought different challenges to conservators-restorers. The abundance of new industrial process in the 20th century, a direct effect of the Industrial Revolution, widely explored by artists, caused a break with tradition, and created a new chapter in the History of Art, due to the mixture of conventional and unconventional materials. The combination of different elements in the same work provokes, in the field of conservation and restoration, challenges for the maintenance of art. In Contemporary Art, the artist also proposes interactive installations with the handling of their works. These experiences end up demanding the adaptation of new strategies for their preservation. In the 20th century, the so-called Digital Art, or Media Art, conquered artists who appropriated different technologies, systems, and machines in their productions. Once again, the materials employed have created new challenges in the field of conservation and restoration, since, with technological evolution, formats, systems, and equipment quickly become obsolete. The aim of this work is to identify and reflect on the problem of obsolescence of Digital Art works and to propose strategies to facilitate the decision-making during the conservation and restoration process and to understand the artist’s vision of this problem. Since Digital Art depends on mechanisms that are part of a dynamic and growing market, in constant evolutionary change, it is inevitable that they will become obsolete. But is the impact of obsolescence seen in the same way by the conservator-restorer and the artist? What is their relationship to the issue of the obsolescence of technological works of art? Does the artist have an interest in the conservation of his/her work? And how can the artist collaborate in this process? What experiences have and have not worked for the artist in the maintenance and conservation of works with technology? And for the conservator-restorer? What research, solutions, and conclusions have already been found in technological art projects? How can the conservator-restorer work with the artist to preserve the work? This work aims to answer this problem by consulting, researching, and interviewing artists and conservator-restorers in the field of art and technology, in order to identify ways, practices, experiences and technical possibilities that contribute to the conservation and restoration of works of art of this nature
