Desde a descoberta da ligação entre miRNA e cancro, que os miRNAs têm sido amplamente investigados. A sua capacidade de regular a expressão de genes, aparentemente não relacionados entre si, tem intrigado bastante os investigadores. Nesta revisão, o papel dos miRNAs no mieloma múltiplo (MM) é analisado, dando especial atenção ao seu potencial como biomarcadores. O potencial papel dos miRNAs circulantes na estratificação de risco é também discutido. Finalmente, os pontos críticos na avaliação de miRNA em MM e as estratégias em curso para resolvê-los são discutidos. A padronização dos procedimentos de análise de miRNA permitirá a inclusão da avaliação miRNA ao lado de ferramentas de estratificação disponíveis de forma a melhorar a gestão dos pacientes com MM.
Since the discovery of the relation between miRNA and cancer that miRNAs have been largely investigated. Their ability to add a different level of gene regulation and to target genes apparently not linked to each other has intrigued researchers. In this review, the role of miRNAs in multiple myeloma (MM) is analyzed, with particular attention to their potential as biomarkers. The potential role of circulating miRNAs in risk stratification is also discussed. Finally, the critical issues in miRNA analysis in MM and ongoing strategies to solve them are discussed. The ability to standardize miRNA analysis procedures will permit the inclusion of miRNA evaluation alongside available stratification tools, improving the management of MM patients.
