Uncanny is an English word used to describe a disconcerting experience that produces fear, unease and inexplicability. There are numerous contributions for the understanding of its meaning, being particularly relevant the ones of Freud and Heidegger. Freud defines uncanny as anything that used to be familiar and close-related but now appears sinister and strange, according to the German word unheimlich. Heidegger suggests that uncanny experiences show the familiar world which we inhabit in a new, mysterious and uncontrollable way. Disconcerting phenomena seem to remove the individual from everyday inauthenticity, by showing the certainty of mortality and by reducing the existential meaning of life. The uncanny experience can occur in the everyday-life, although it is also described as a possible psychopathological phenomenon or even a symptom. Svenaeus considers the uncanny as a possible core aspect of the experience of falling ill in any diagnosis, by presenting this experience as a way of living the uncanny body. We discuss the impact that this consideration can have in medical practice, the role of the doctor and the objectives of medicine.
