Abstract(s)

This is the study of The Game Show proposed by the artist collective ABC No Rio (in Exile) in New York City, 2018: a collective experience, negotiation of meanings and methods, and an experience of unpredictably becoming. A collaborative effort by artists to create an art exhibition which transformed the gallery at Bullet Space into a game activated by the public. There were actually three games: 1) the final game in exhibition at the gallery, resulting from the collaboration, 2) a game of negotiation and agreement between artists during the working process and 3) historical spatial negotiations, which end up ensuring the existence of the proponent institutions in New York City. As background, there is a heavily gentrified Manhattan, with by artists-squatters occupied buildings, invisibility of local artists, survival strategies and denial of profit. As methodology, there are testimonies of artists and public, inventory of what was seen in the gallery, and the description of labor itself. The problematic grows from the intense demographic diversity of the island, in a moment of extreme individualization of dreams and fainting notion of citizenship. What is the relevance of art and games when everybody wins or loses only together, as a collective rather than as an individual, in the New York of today?
