A “Diplomacia”, foi uma estratégia usada ao longo da Idade Média nas relações entre os reinos Ibéricos como forma de resolver conflitos e lidar com acontecimentos de uma forma pacífica. Vamos interpretá-la como a arte de orientar as complexas relações humanas e políticas num determinado sentido, por um determinado período, procurando alcançar um desfecho positivo para uma situação. O seu sucesso ou fracasso levava muitas vezes à definição de novas estratégias entre os reinos.
As Embaixadas e os embaixadores que constituíram o esforço diplomático português face a Castela, a partir de finais do século XIV, implementaram novos conceitos orientadores usando cada vez mais a diplomacia como uma vertente política alicerçada por alianças militares e comerciais. Tal intensifica-se a partir do século XV, pois os reinos buscam a paz, incentivados pela conquista dos novos espaços ultramarinos. São estes diplomatas, representantes da política externa do reino de Portugal face a Castela e as diferentes embaixadas que analisamos neste trabalho.
Diplomacy was a strategy used throughout the Middle Ages in relations between the Iberian kingdoms as a means of resolving conflicts and dealing with events in a peaceful manner. Let us interpret it as the art of guiding complex human and political relations in a certain sense for a certain period, seeking to achieve a positive outcome for a situation. Their success or failure often led to new strategies being defined among the kingdoms. The embassies and ambassadors that constituted the Portuguese diplomatic effort towards Castile from the late 14th century implemented new guiding concepts, increasingly using diplomacy as a political strand underpinned by military and trade alliances. This has intensified since the fifteenth century, as the kingdoms seek peace, encouraged by the conquest of new overseas spaces. These are diplomats, representatives of the foreign policy of the Kingdom of Portugal in relation to Castile and the different embassies.
