seja, o forte interesse demonstrado pelas empresas portuguesas no mercado brasileiro e
In the last years, foreign direct investment flows have grown at a global scale, never seen before. This growth has been accompanied by a process of globalisation characterized by the almost perfect mobility of capital flows, the deregulation of financial markets, and the numerous mergers and acquisitions that, in one way or another, have influenced the strategies of multinationals and the extension of their activities over the national socio-economic territories. In this context, some countries have stood out because of their role as receivers or senders of foreign direct investment. Among them, we fmd Brazil and Portugal. The present work proposes to study their new reality, which is, the strong interest Portuguese companies have demonstrated in the brazilian market and the power of attraction that this country has transmitted over the last years. In order to demonstrate this new situation, we have based our studies on the evolutionary analysis of bilateral flows in foreign direct investment, through data referring to a period of fífteen years, between 1985 and 1999 and by elaborating a case study based on a Portuguese company that has invested in Brazil, On the other hand, we have tried to explore the influence Portuguese and brazilian behaviour may have on the consolidation of the relation between the regional markets of which both are part, which are, the European Union and Mercosul.
