The history of humanity and, consequently, the history of Architecture are both closely related to the history of disease. The human being, vulnerable to pests, has over time also sought answers in Architecture to be able to transform and improve the environment in which he lives and to find effective ways to protect himself in order to survive and evolve. Architecture proves to be part of the adaptation and transformation process of cities and buildings when a disruptive phenomenon affects society. The main objective of this investigation is to understand the phenomenon of the most recent COVID-19 pandemic and its impact on cities and the lives of populations in the 21st century. It also aims to study how Architecture, throughout human history, takes an active role and reinvents itself to requalify cities and their buildings, when societies at different times are threatened and affected by epidemics and pandemics; this historical research focuses on the period considered most relevant (14th – 20th centuries), contemplating four paradigmatic case studies where architecture's Resilience can be observed as a response in these times of rupture. It also aims to inform the Architecture and the city of the future. The research is exploratory, carried out during the COVID-19 pandemic, centered on the concept of socioecological urban resilience, as base for the construction of a systematic matrix to analyse the COVID-19 phenomenon, to understand changes in habits, customs and spatial adaptations in response to the new demands of this pandemic. The desired impact of this investigation will be to contribute to the knowledge of the COVID-19 phenomenon, and to a broader reflection on the role of Architecture and the resilience of cities during and after epidemics and pandemics.
