Resumo(s)

In this study, given the requirements that are imposed in the European and national law on sustainable use of pesticides and risk reduction, the application of pesticides in green areas city council of Almada was evaluated. The practical work allowed characterization of the applicators, the main pests, pesticides used and techniques applied in the study area. The analysis of indices allowed to qualify the pesticides used, according to the physical-chemical and environmental partition through the fugacity model of Mackay and the leaching potential (as GUS), as well as the potential health effects, according to the classification of the World Health Organization and the European Union. The most commonly used pesticides are herbicides, whose application occurs in areas used by the general public and vulnerable groups. Despite the concerns raised in the EU, no risk management measures have been established to date. The fact that there is no data on the subject for Portugal makes the present work an important contribution in supporting the decision-making related with pesticide applications in urban green areas. It contributes to the selection of pesticides according to a different use, taking into account their properties and potential consequences of their use on the environment and health
