arquitetura tradicional e a arquitetura industrializada.
The degradation and abandonment that many significant Portuguese buildings have been experiencing means that there is a need to act in order to preserve them. As such, the present Final Masters Project seeks to raise awareness of their existence, in order to ensure its utility and simultaneously its preservation for the service of the local community. The Convento de Nossa Senhora dos Mártires e da Conceição de Sacavém is one of these exemples, with a proposed Urban Plan for the area of the Quartel de Sacavém and Praça da República, in which we can perceive that the old Convent building disappears in the middle of the new buildings, turning it into a mere building in the middle of the others. The proposed program is based on the reuse of this building for the benefit of the surrounding community, where the creation of a space designed for all generations addresses the social needs identified in the local community. The architectural themes addressed during the Final Master’s Project are those of rehabilitation and sustainability, where the premise of safeguarding Sacavém’s historical heritage is paramount. In addition to the rehabilitation and adaptation of the existing building, a new volume has been designed, reusing shipping containers, bringing contemporaneity to the proposed intervention, creating a link between traditional architecture and as a reminder of industrial architecture. An urban intervention is also part of this project as to connect the city to the rehabilitated building and its spaces.
