The impossibility of the land and the displacement of the characters is a recurring presence in José Saramago's work, from the chronicles, where it is evident in the lexicon, to the novels, which constitute the most substantial part of his work and a summary of programmatic points that the author has been presenting in the various genres he has explored. In this dissertation, we will try to study how the theme of exile is dealt with in Saramago's work. In the first part of this paper, we will see how the author's work follows a line of meaning in which the feeling of exile emerges. In the second part, we will see the signs of this line starting in the "Formative Period", where it appears essentially in the vocabulary, giving a glimpse of a persistent motif in the author's writing. Finally, we will see how the novels The Stone Raft (1986) and Blindness (1995) constitute two different ways of approaching this constant presence, in a maturity where the different approaches that have developed over the course of José Saramago's textual production converge.
