Design and music have been deeply related since the first half of the 20th century. This relationship formally began when album covers started to be recognized as design objects. Due to designs contribution, record covers have, not only become a commercial product, but also an extremely important way of communicating with their audience, enabling the creation of a powerful visual connection within the music they intend to represent. Despite constant changes in the format, album covers managed to maintain their value, however, with the arrival of the digital age everything changed, with some even considering that album covers had come to an end, as they were no longer fulfilling their initial functions. Along with design, illustration has also always played a fundamental role in the visual component of music. However, despite its importance - especially in the early days of the visual image of music – illustration has been placed in second place. The aim of this investigation was precisely to understand the role of design and illustration in the communication of music, and how they’re adapted to all the different formats that music can take. During the investigation, a carefully assembled literature review was carried out, which was essential for the study of several topics relevant to the subject, as well as an analysis of case studies, interviews with different personalities within the universe of music, design and illustration, and questionnaires. In addition to these methodologies, during the design project, prototyping methods and mental maps will be also applied. The latter will be fundamental in the organization and implementation of a variety of ideas and concepts. This investigation resulted in an illustrated music record covers project, which main objective was of demonstrating that illustration can be a huge source of advantages and potentialities within the communication of music.
