O núcleo da presente tese consiste na elaboração de um comentário histórico às XIV Filípicas de Marco Túlio Cícero. Este comentário, que será inédito uma vez que é o primeiro comentário histórico integral às Filípicas de Cícero, pretende suprir essa lacuna na produção académica nacional e internacional.
A tese está dividida em três partes. Na primeira parte, proceder-se-á à formulação de uma série de estudos introdutórios que compreenderão uma análise sobre as fontes disponíveis para concatenação e comparação com as Filípicas, um estudo sobre o clima político em Roma antes dos Idos de Março, e uma introdução histórica às Filípicas. O âmago do estudo está na segunda parte da tese, em que se fará um comentário pari passu às Filípicas, com o qual se pretende levar a uma reinterpretação crítica da obra. Na terceira parte, faremos as considerações finais e a respectiva sistematização de dados, que se focará, essencialmente, no valor historiográfico das Filípicas.
Procuraremos submeter as Filípicas a uma análise cuidada, colocando a hermenêutica ao serviço do saber histórico com o objectivo de uma melhor compreensão de uma das obras que mais influenciou o pensamento político do Ocidente.
The core of the present thesis consists in the elaboration of an historical commentary on the XIV Philippicae of Marcus Tullius Cicero. This commentary, which will be unique since it is the first comprehensive historical commentary on Cicero‘s Philippics, aims to fill that gap in both national and international scholarly production. This thesis will be divided into three parts. In the first part, we will proceed to establish a number of preliminary studies that will include an assessment of the sources available for concatenation and comparison with the Philippicae, a study of the political atmosphere in Rome before the Ides of March, and a historical introduction to the Philippicae. The core of the study will be set in the second part of the thesis, in which a pari passu commentary on the Philippicae will be carried out, with the aim to lead to a critical reinterpretation of the work. In the third part, we will make our final considerations and the respective systematisation of the data, which will focus essentially on the historiographical value of the Philippicae. We will try to submit the Philippics to a careful analysis, placing hermeneutics at the service of historical knowledge with the aim of a better understanding of one of the works that most influenced the political thought of the Western world.
