This work aims to investigate the scientific evidence that substantiates the effectiveness of hypnosis in smoking cessation and the factors that influence it. Smoking cessation is one of the most important objectives of the General Health Directorate (DGS) and the World Health Organization (WHO) as it relates to major morbidity and mortality. As policies for treatment at national level are the type of action program in smoking cessation (DGS, 2007) and Clinical Guidance Standards (NOC) for Smoking Cessation (2008). However, hypnosis in this context has been particular fond of interest either by the patient or by the scientific community. We concluded that there is insufficient evidence for inferring or undermine the effectiveness of hypnosis in smoking cessation. More extensive studies are needed for greater methodological quality, in order to draw more concrete conclusions. It is recognized, however, that hypnosis may enhance the effects of other treatments, so it can be integrated into an individualized multidisciplinary program and intensively.
