In this study we will investigate a specific sculptural typology, assumed in the Portuguese Public Sculpture. Given the specificities of this typology, we will address a certain period, comprehended between the beginning of this typology and the time of its establishment, and development, in the Portuguese territory. Consequently, we will address the period, established between the 70´s and the beginning of the XXI century. The misunderstanding and the discredit given to this typology promoted, and still urges, a certain degree of controversy, that, perpetuates it´s indefinition. This study will strongly oppose this tendency; on this subject, this work proceeds to the definition of the term of public sculpture, and, consequently, to the enumeration and categorization of it´s different manifestations, in an attempt to demonstrate it´s different possibilities in the Portuguese territory. This investigation addresses three purposes, supposedly divergent in their functionalities, but directly interconnected between themselves: the first purpose of this work is assumed by the definition of the term of Sculpture and of Public Sculpture, and it´s multiple categories, presented in the public space. The definition of the concept of Public Sculpture will promote the understanding of the generic purposes of this manifestation; by itself, the analysis of the sculptures that constitutes this work, presented in the portuguese public space, will demonstrate the intentions found beneath the portuguese sculptural practice, therefore allowing the verification of one more purpose, present in this study, that is assumed in the possibility of a certain path, particular to the portuguese public sculpture. The second purpose of this investigation is assumed in the establishment of a theoretical/practical knowledge, that should be - and it is - founded in the practice of sculpture. To this purpose, it was recovered the process of composition, in an attempt to value the sculpture´s practice and its technical and creative process, that is found its the handling of the material and its volume – sculptor´s perspective. The understanding of the process of composition intends the awareness of the intrinsic principles, that are present in any sculpture; at this point, it is simultaneously instituted a certain methodology, related to a scientific practice, that will allow a new analysis of sculpture, now established in the sculptural values. This analysis will give significance to the appreciation of the material and it`s technique, to the observation of the volume, to the awareness of the technical-creative confrontation, and to much more interpretations, resultant from the ennoblement of the process of composition, that had been marginalized thru time. The third and final purpose of this study is found in the inquiry of a certain path in the portuguese public sculpture; that path is largely proven, in an intuitive-perceptive level, given by the observation of different sculptures in the public spaces, however, this path had been somewhat difficult to prove, given its variety of themes, theories and expressions, that are present in its examples, making it extremely problematic the comparison of the different cases of public sculpture. In this sense, the consolidation of this work´s purposes allows an analysis of different examples, therefore, conceding the comparison of different cases and categories of sculptures, given its regent principles -founded in the compositional analysis. Therefore, this work is settled in a certain expositive logic, of different cases of portuguese public sculptures; such presentation intends to demonstrate certain values, principles, theories, themes and sculptural actions, that identifies the portuguese public sculpture. The demonstration of the its intrinsic characteristics will validate a certain sculptural path, that is singular to the portuguese expression.pt_PT
