infecção do tracto urinário associada à doença endócrina e caracterização desta comorbilidade.
Foi realizada urianálise com urocultura quantitativa a 18 pacientes com várias endocrinopatias: -
hiperadrenocorticismo canino (n=5); - diabetes mellitus canina (n=4); - diabetes mellitus felina
(n=4); - hipertiroidismo felino (n=3); - hipoadrenocorticismo canino (n=1); e, - diabetes insipidus
central canina (n=1). Identificou-se seis casos de infecção urinária associada a
hiperadrenocorticismo canino (n=1), diabetes mellitus felina (n=3), hipertiroidismo felino (n=1) e
diabetes insipidus central canina (n=1).
Apesar da reduzida dimensão da amostra, foi possível descrever vários elementos clínicos que
ABSTRACT - URINARY TRACT INFECTION COMPLICATING ENDOCRINE DISEASE IN SMALL ANIMALS - Urinary tract infection is a serious complication of endocrine disorders in small animals and is frequently overlooked. The aims of this study were to evaluate the proportion of patients who attended Montenegro Veterinary Hospital with endocrinopathy-associated urinary tract infections and to characterize this comorbidity. Urinalysis and quantitative urine culture were performed on 18 subjects with different endocrine disorders: - canine hyperadrenocorticism (n=5); - canine diabetes mellitus (n=4); -feline diabetes mellitus (n=4); - feline hyperthyroidism (n=3); - canine hypoadrenocorticism (n=1); and, - canine central diabetes insipidus (n=1). Six patients were diagnosed with urinary tract infection, including subjects with canine hyperadrenocorticism (n=1), feline diabetes mellitus (n=3), feline hyperthyroidism (n=1) and canine central diabetes insipidus (n=1). Despite the reduced sample size, it was possible to describe various clinical signs that may be helpful to predict infection in endocrine patients, particularly historical and analytical findings. However, urine culture proved crucial approaching those disorders, since it allowed the characterization of urinary tract infection as a cause of treatment resistance and, on the other hand, as an important differential diagnosis. Therefore, it is recommended urine culture as part of the endocrine patient evaluation, irrespective of clinical stability.
