Resumo(s)

This project work, in order to obtain a master's degree in Museology and Museography, proposes the creation of a museological nucleus in an existing space in the Alto de São João Cemetery (CASJ), in the city of Lisbon. The room used for depositing coffins, where there are eight stone tables, inspired the creation of an exhibition route, where one can insinuate the chronicles of legal medicine in Portugal, linked to the history and design of cemeteries. In places like this, autopsies were often carried out, especially in the case of exhumations requested by the judicial bodies, which is why this area has a very relevant role in the historical evolution in the medical-legal context. Contemplating the creation of Lisbon's cemetery, we can infer the privilege of conceiving the existence of a place where one could learn about death, while alerting to the essential need of protecting and safeguarding this heritage, as well as its presentation to the public. The essence of this investigation represents, on the one hand, the pratical work carried out during the internship at the Divisão de Gestão Cemiterial (Cemetery Management Division of the Municipality of Lisbon), in the execution of the inventory of the photographic collection and in an attempt to perpetuate the safeguard process in the most varied aspects of the cemetery heritage. On the other hand, the theoretical development added to the museological proposal, is divided in distinct phases, where it's presented the medical-legal evolution in Portugal and in the world, the design of the funerary spaces and, finally, the presentation of the curatorial project conceived. Considering the role of museums and museological spaces, increasingly prevalent in a society where the challenge of preserving the history and memory of human beings is growing, the creation of this space that can protect this narrative, displaying its presence is, in addition to being one of the fundamental objectives of a museum space, an asset for the heritage and for the city of Lisbon.
