Understanding a city is, beyond its monuments, beyond the history inscribed within its stones, to rediscover a way of being, particular to its inhabitants. Levi-Strauss, C. (1955). It is in this way that the understanding of the city of Lisbon is tested and later the rehabilitation of the Convent of Arroios is worked on. associated with the premise of Levi Strauss, and informing a working method, we resort to Aldo Rossi (2001), when he approaches the theme of visualizing the city in the general for a subsequent intervention in the particular: I do not believe that we should see these elements in themselves, but rather see them as elements of a unitary formation. Based on these ways of understanding and intervening in the urban environment, the work systematizes a proposal for architectural intervention in this environment, based on the possibility of rehabilitation of the Convent of Arroios. Involved both in terms of architectural rehabilitation and also through its association with the proposed new construction, a dignified solution is developed for the monument and for the city, through the programmatic way of offering affordable housing, through the proposed complementarity with the commercial offer, services and public space, in order to reinsert the Convent, socially and economically, in such a private and central area of Lisbon, such as the Parish of Arroios. The Convent of Arroios will be studied in terms of its history and its current state. From a historical point of view, the objective will be to contextualize its implantation in the city, relating it with other establishments of convents in Lisbon, as well as with the different conventual typologies and organization of the space of the fence, both in the past and in the present, framing them through a cartographic representation in the 21st century. In this way, the verb tense is transferred to the present, where Politics in Architecture will have a relevant place, in order to achieve a better understanding of the various factors that led the Convent of Arroios to the state of degradation and partial abandonment in that is found.
