A presente dissertação visa apresentar um diagnóstico dos serviços para
deficientes visuais nas bibliotecas universitárias portuguesas no contexto das ciências da
documentação e informação. É comummente aceite que um serviço de qualidade só
poderá ser atingido quando a Biblioteca estiver sensibilizada para as necessidades
sentidas pelos seus utentes, adaptando os seus serviços, recursos, materiais e espaços
aos seus utilizadores, presentes e futuros. Se tivermos em conta públicos com
características próprias a resposta poderá revelar-se desanimadora. Tomámos como
exemplo as pessoas portadoras de deficiência visual, potenciais utilizadores das
bibliotecas universitárias, procurando indagar se esta população tem iguais
possibilidades no acesso à informação em formatos alternativos e adaptados. Partindo
desta pergunta, procurou-se averiguar qual o estado da situação dos serviços para
deficientes visuais nas bibliotecas universitárias em Portugal, através da aplicação de
um inquérito em linha dirigido aos responsáveis pelas bibliotecas do Ensino Superior
Público e Privado. Concluímos que, genericamente, não estão dotadas de serviços
especializados para atender às necessidades do público portador de deficiência visual.
Abstract: This thesis aims to present a diagnosis of the services for the blind and visually impaired in Portuguese academic libraries in the context of Library and Information Sciences. The common knowledge ensures that quality services can only be achieved when the Libraries are aware of the readers’ needs and adapt their services, resources, materials and spaces to their present and future users. If we take into account different kinds of public with different characteristics the results may prove to be daunting. We took as a case study people with visual impairment, potential users of the academic libraries, and we tried to know if this population has equal possibilities in what concerns access to information in alternative and adapted formats. From this starting point we tried to know more about Portuguese academic libraries, through the application of an online survey addressed to the libraries’ managers of Public and Private Higher Education. We have concluded that, in general, they do not provide special services to fulfil the blind and visually impaired demands.
