Abstract(s)
This dissertation examined theatre as an innovative pedagogical tool in education, based on a case study of the Teia Methodology, a pedagogical approach with two decades of history, already applied in various schools in Brazil and Portugal, where theatre constitutes a central element of its pedagogy. This was a qualitative research study. Seven questionnaires were conducted with educators experienced in the methodology under study, alongside a literature review on the use of theatre in education and on education and innovation. The overarching aim was to investigate the role of theatre as a tool for innovation in education, analysing how its application contributes to the development of cognitive, social, and creative skills in diverse educational settings. The specific objectives were as follows: first, to explore the impact of theatre on students' creativity and critical thinking; second, to analyse the influence of theatre on the development of socio-emotional skills among students of different age groups; and third, to gather and examine professional accounts of the experience of using theatre in education. The findings indicate that, according to the experience of the interviewed professionals, in alignment with specialised literature, the use of theatre in education is perceived as positive. It is recognised not only for its role in fostering social and emotional skills but also for enhancing the learning of academic content. Furthermore, theatre is considered beneficial for promoting creativity and autonomy.
