| dc.description.abstract | Dementia is one of the leading causes of disability worldwide, as it causes a progressive and irreversible decline in people’s functioning. Reminiscence therapy is the most widely used non-pharmacological therapy in the treatment of dementia. This therapy concept seeks, above all, to stimulate memories, often facilitating communication in reminiscence sessions between caregivers and people with dementia, increasing their social interactions. As an alternative to conventional reminiscence therapy, technological solutions have been developed with the purpose of greater efficiency. However, these technological solutions have some shortcomings with regard to caregivers management of reminiscence activity sessions. In this work, we evolved the base version of the KeepsakeBox platform by incorporating the creation and execution of reminiscence activity sessions. The creation of sessions allows the selection of several images according to the chosen themes. When conducting sessions, the selected images are presented and it is possible to collect the emotional reaction of the person with dementia. To develop the solution, we started by identifying the requirements of formal and informal caregivers. With the obtained data we developed low-fidelity prototypes, performing some iterations, until we found the most appropriate application design that served as the basis for the development of the solution. To conclude the work, we assessed the platform through tests with caregivers. The obtained results show that the developed functionalities meet the caregiver’s needs, and that recognized users a high degree of usefulness and usability in the dynamization of reminiscence activity sessions. | pt_PT |
