At a time when China is seeking to cement its hegemonic position in the Eastern bloc and is increasingly nearing its goal of balancing the global geopolitical scale, the disputes in the South China Sea take on a new dimension and geopolitical importance. The South China Sea is the only region in the world without defined maritime borders. These disputes over boundary demarcation stem from ancient conflicts over the sovereignty of various islands and their waters, but also from the geopolitical significance they hold, whether due to their natural resources or their geostrategic position. Several studies examine these disputes based on classical geopolitics. In the first part of this study, which provides a contextualization of the Sino-Vietnamese conflict over the sovereignty of the Paracel Islands, we derive from the classical geopolitical assumptions. However, in the second part, we also incorporate critical geopolitics theories, particularly popular geopolitics, to analyze the representation of the conflict in the public sphere. In this context, we thoroughly analyzed a series of news reports on three distinct episodes related to the Sino-Vietnamese dispute over the sovereignty of the Paracel Islands, published in a large sample of press sources. This analysis aligns with the tenets of popular geopolitics and the investigations into the geopolitical power of the media, and it includes the appreciation of the geopolitical dimension of images as highlighted by critical geopolitics studies. This examination resulted in an extensive discussion of findings, as well as a comparison of the different representations and the formulation of hypotheses and possible justifications for how these episodes were portrayed by the various press sources analyzed.
