Esta dissertação constitui um estudo alargado dos motivos decorativos e das composições pictóricas em objetos namban de várias tipologias envolvendo peças que se encontram em contextos museológicos e do mercado da arte nos quais estes temas literários, folclóricos e religiosos se encontram representados, nomeadamente em catálogos de antiquários e coleções privadas. A abordagem inclui museus nacionais e internacionais como o Museu Nacional de Tóquio, o Museu Nacional de Arte Antiga, o Museu Municipal de Kobe, o Rijkmuseum de Amesterdão entre outros. Na literatura destaca-se maioritariamente o clássico Período Heian (794-1185) e as suas antologias poéticas e prosas. No folclore destaco sobretudo os espíritos animais e mitológicos que fazem sempre parte das representações artísitcas pictóricas destes objetos, bem como os motivos vegtalistas e padrões geométricos. No que toca às religiões estuda-se a simbiose que foi feita entre as três confissões que entraram em contacto a partir do momento em que os portugueses chegaram ao Japão: o Xintoísmo, o Budismo e o Cristianismo.
This dissertation constitutes an extensive study of the decorative motifs and pictorial compositions on namban objects of various types, involving pieces found in museum contexts and the art market, where these literary, folkloric, and religious themes are represented, namely in antique dealer catalogs and private collections. The approach includes national and international museums such as the Tokyo National Museum, the Museu Nacional de Arte Antiga, in Lisbon, the Kobe City Museum, the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam, among others. In literature, the focus is predominantly on the classical Heian Period (794–1185) and its poetic anthologies and prose. In folklore, I mainly highlight the animal and mythological spirits, which are always part of the artistic pictorial representations of these objects, as well as vegetal motifs and geometric patterns. Regarding religions, the study explores the symbiosis that emerged between the three faiths that came into contact from the moment the Portuguese arrived in Japan: Shintoism, Buddhism, and Christianity.
