Abstract(s)
In the context of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, information technology (IT) has grown exponentially, playing a central role in socioeconomic development. This research focused on IT professionals and sought to understand the influence of gender on their trajectories in three stages: entry into IT, professional experience, and future career expectations. “Quadros de Pessoal” database provided insights and contextualized these professionals in comparison to other sectors, from a sociodemographic and organizational insertion perspective. The results revealed an underrepresentation of women in IT in Portugal, as well as horizontal and vertical segregation. In general, disparities between men and women prevail at various levels. After gaining insights into these professionals and the existing gender disparities, 27 IT professionals (14F; 13M) were interviewed to understand their experiences and perceptions. The interviews revealed a masculine homogeneity and a feminine heterogeneity concerning entry paths into the field. Once in the labor market, women seem to face more challenges compared to men. Future career expectations also diverge, with women more inclined toward pursuing management positions rather than technical roles. Four career trajectories were identified: traditional, late, alternative, and instrumental. Gender appears to be a significant factor in how men and women choose, experience, and advance in their IT careers. This iterative process, stemming from mixed methods, captures the breadth and depth of gender's influence on IT professionals' trajectories. In summary, this research provided an overview of gender disparities in IT in Portugal, confirming the perception that women are at a disadvantage in the field and highlighting the barriers they face in their paths. At the same time, it offers a conceptual tool for monitoring future changes in IT. This research goes beyond the fragmented analyses found in the literature, offering a holistic and longitudinal view of the influence of gender in IT.
