| dc.description.abstract | A presente dissertação, apresentada no âmbito do Mestrado em Estudos Ingleses e Americanos, tem como objectivo abordar a representação do amor sacrificial nas colectâneas de contos de Oscar Wilde, The Happy Prince and Other Tales (1888) e A House of Pomegranates (1892), e articulá-la com a caracterização genológica dos contos, de forma a ponderar o modo como Oscar Wilde usa as convenções do conto de fadas na construção dos seus contos, tendo sempre em conta o duplo enquadramento do autor – o vitorianismo inglês e o contexto irlandês. Esta dissertação consiste em três capítulos, para além da introdução e da conclusão. O primeiro capítulo incide sobre a contextualização de questões teóricas acerca da definição de fairy tale, enquanto género e forma de arte literária. O segundo capítulo apresenta uma contextualização dos contos de Wilde na época vitoriana. O terceiro capítulo analisa criticamente a representação de amor sacrificial em “The Happy Prince”, “The Nightingale and the Rose”, “The Fisherman and His Soul” e “The Star-Child” e considera o modo como estes contos utilizam as convenções dos contos das fadas. Neste estudo sobre um corpus e um tema ainda pouco estudado pela crítica literária, apoiar-me-ei no trabalho de autores como Jarlath Killeen (2007), Jack Zipes (1983, 2000, 2012), Donald Haase (2008), Peter Raby (1997), Marina Warner (2014), Elisabeth Harris (2003), Anne Markey (2015), entre outros. Espero assim, trazer uma nova abordagem aos contos de Oscar Wilde em termos temáticos e genológicos. | pt_PT |
| dc.description.abstract | The present dissertation, presented within the Masters in English and American Studies, aims to address the representation of sacrificial love in Oscar Wilde's collections of fairy tales, The Happy Prince and Other Tales (1888) and A House of Pomegranates (1892); concurrently, it considers these narratives’ genre in order to assess how Oscar Wilde uses the fairy tale conventions in the construction of his tales, taking always in consideration the author’s dual framework - the English Victorianism and the Irish context. This dissertation consists of three chapters, besides the introduction and the conclusion. The first chapter focus on the contextualization of theoretical questions about the definition of fairy tale as a genre and a form of literary art. The second chapter presents a contextualization of Wilde’s tales in the Victorian era. The third chapter critically analyses the representation of sacrificial love in “The Happy Prince”, “The Nightingale and the Rose”, “The Fisherman and His Soul” and “The Star-Child”; and considers the form how they make use of the fairy tale conventions. In this study of a corpus and topic which still has been little studied by literary criticism, I rely on the work of authors such as Jarlath Killeen (2007), Jack Zipes (1983, 2000, 2012), Donald Haase (2008), Peter Raby (1997), Marina Warner (2014), Elisabeth Harris (2003), Anne Markey (2015), among others.
