A economia local do Surf e o desenvolvimento de pequenas cidades: o caso de Peniche

Abstract(s)
A temática do surf, bem como a atividade turística que surge associada a este produto, tem
sido o elemento principal do desenvolvimento do concelho de Peniche, conhecido desde há
muito tempo como uma vila piscatória com uma relação muito próxima ao mar. Esta ligação
ao mar ganhou outra reputação através da existência de uma onda reconhecida mundialmente
– a onda de Supertubos. Trata-se assim de um segmento com grande peso na economia do
concelho de Peniche, que associado ao turismo, abre portas a novas oportunidades
traduzidas no aumento gradual, não só de escolas e lojas de surf, mas também de alojamentos
locais. Esta dissertação tem assim como objetivo principal identificar a importância da
economia local do surf e verificar qual foi o seu impacto no desenvolvimento de Peniche.
Com base nos dados recolhidos do emprego nas atividades ligadas ao surf, conclui-se um
claro aumento do ano de 2011 para o ano de 2018, principalmente no setor do alojamento e
restauração. Neste contexto, o turismo tornou-se uma das áreas mais importantes do
concelho de Peniche, como demonstram os valores dos dados analisados, sejam eles a Taxa
Líquida de Ocupação de Camas, as Dormidas nos Estabelecimentos de Alojamento Turístico
e Estabelecimentos Hoteleiros, Hóspedes não Residentes, entre outros, que sofreram um
aumento ao longo dos anos em análise.
O turismo interagiu com as demais atividades económicas: lojas de surf, escolas de surf, cafés,
restaurantes, bares, hotéis e hostels. O reconhecimento desta região, principalmente a nível
internacional, tem gerado mais visitas, mais consumos, mais dormidas que, por sua vez,
resultaram na criação de mais alojamentos e outros tipos de ofertas e fonte de receitas. Para
suportar também os resultados obtidos, o simulacro dos impactos económicos apresentado
no subcapítulo 6.3. vem corroborar isso mesmo. Para além da análise estatística, realizaramse inquéritos e entrevistas cujos resultados corroboraram nas mudanças identificadas.
The theme of surfing, as well as the tourist activity associated to this product, has been the main element in the development of the municipality of Peniche, known for a long time as a fishing village with a very close relationship to the sea. This connection to the sea has gained another reputation through the existence of a world-renowned wave – the Supertubos wave. This is a segment with great weight in the economy of the municipality of Peniche, which, associated with tourism, opens the door to new opportunities translated into the gradual increase, not only of surf schools and shops, but also of local accommodation. The main objective of this dissertation is to identify the importance of the local surfing economy and verify its impact on the development of Peniche. Based on data collected from employment in surfing-related activities, a clear increase from 2011 to 2018 is concluded, mainly in the accommodation and catering sector. In this context, tourism has become one of the most important areas in the municipality of Peniche, as shown by the values of the data analysed, whether they are the Net Occupancy Rate of Beds, Nights in Tourist Accommodation Establishments and Hotel Establishments, Non-Resident Guests, among others, which have increased over the years under review. Tourism interacted with other economic activities: surf shops, surf schools, cafes, restaurants, bars, hotels and hostels. The recognition of this region, especially internationally, has generated more visits, more consumption, more overnight stays, which in return, have resulted in the creation of more accommodation and other types of offers and sources of income. To also support the results obtained, the simulation of economic impacts presented in subchapter 6.3. comes to corroborate this. In addition to the statistical analysis, surveys and interviews were carried out, whose results corroborated the identified changes.
