Abstract(s)

The study of figure drawing from the 18th to the 20th century is relevant not only as teaching resources, but also in its contribution to the creative process. Drawing from a live model is a fundamental learning exercise that is still practiced in Fine Arts faculties today. Although in our thesis we relate this type of drawing to photography, our focus is always on the drawing point of view, investigating the exchanges between France and Portugal through scholarship students in the 19th and early 20th centuries. In order to enrich this perspective on drawing, we favored texts written by artists and fine arts teachers. As far as we are concerned, there is an unresolved question: did the advent of photography have a direct influence on figure drawing practiced at the Fine Arts Academies? In addition to this question, we have set other objectives for our research. Firstly, we intend to understand the relationship between nude model photography and its use as an object of study in the teaching of academic drawing. We intend to investigate the cause of the change in graphic representation in the academies from the 18th to the 19th century, assessing whether it is related to the invention of photography. In addition, we want to propose a new way of interpreting the discourse of academic drawing, contributing knowledge about the teaching practiced in the academies, with a perspective that relates drawing and photography. Finally, we intend to make available for consultation the method of figure drawing from the second half of the 19th century in the portuguese academies. With regard to the methodology adopted, so that this research was not based solely on a bibliographical review and empirical analysis of images, we complemented it with statistical analyses that allowed us to obtain objective data. Essentially, we present an appreciation of 19th century academic drawing, according to the contributions of photography, allowing for new understandings of realism in figure drawing
