Abstract(s)
Neste trabalho,
A viagem,
ABSTRACT: The topic of travel is recurrent in José Saramago’s literary work. In this dissertation, both The Stone Raft (1986) and The Elephant’s Journey (2008) are analysed with the purpose of identifying the different kinds of journey found in these two books. The journey, perceived here as a transformative process of the individual, is approached from two different vantage points: an internal one, in which the Self undergoes transformation as he experiences external events, and an external one, in which the Self faces the Other, both establishing different relationships with each other. Thus, the dissertation muses upon the confluence between these external and internal movements in individuals, the personal evolution of the Self being considered as an ongoing journey. Due to the thematic affinities with the two novels above-mentioned, the writer/traveller in Journey to Portugal (1981) will also be duly taken into account.
