The present work intends to analyse the role played by the hospitable Order of Saint John of God in the treatment and support to the psychiatric patients, considering the innovative nature of applied methods. It is not possible to make known the Hospitable Order of Saint John of God without first having an idea of the life of its Founder. Therein lies the whole understanding of the action of a handful of men and later of women who, privileging the treatment of the others, have left behind their lives and comforts. It is therefore a small but we hope, lucid point, of the life of Saint John of God that we will integrate in this work. On the other hand, despite the enthusiasm that we are wishing to take to an immense work, without borders, capable of causing legitimate admiration – today this Work is in many countries and has many Houses and Institutions – we must mark our work in in order to make it accessible. Thus, we will restrain it, using the two great coordinates of history: space and time, focusing on the action of the Brothers and Sisters in Portugal (national space: European, Islands and overseas) and for a period of time extremely agitated and controversial in Portugal which is the First Portuguese Republic, since 1910 to 1926. To plan and to organize the work in this way is to arrive at the conclusion that writing about Hospitable Order of Saint John in Portugal, a hundred years ago is, effectively, to write about the Heath Institution of Telhal and also, a little, on the House of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, in Idanha.
