| dc.description.abstract | A presente dissertação de mestrado, desenvolvida na área científica das Relações Internacionais e dos estudos diplomáticos, procura contribuir positivamente para o estudo da utilização do desporto na política externa do Médio Oriente, analisando a aposta da Arábia Saudita em sports diplomacy entre o período de 2016 e 2022. Neste sentido, sob uma ótica construtivista e seguindo uma metodologia maioritariamente qualitativa, são analisados: em primeiro lugar, o desporto como ferramenta de política externa e a sua exploração por regimes autoritários como o Qatar e Emirados Árabes Unidos; em segundo lugar, como a Arábia Saudita tem aumentado a sua influência internacional através do desporto, evidenciando o fator sociológico entre adeptos e desporto; e os investimentos realizados pelo Fundo de Investimento Público saudita no desporto internacional, apesar do pouco foco que o desporto tem na estratégia saudita Vision 2030. A dissertação discute os conceitos de sportswashing e sports diplomacy na Arábia Saudita, confrontando-os, procurando contribuir para um tema pouco explorado no campo académico. Da análise efetuada, conclui-se que: a Arábia Saudita usa o desporto como ferramenta de política externa, tal como outros Estados do Golfo Árabe, como o Qatar e os Emirados Árabes Unidos; que o desporto é utilizado para melhorar a imagem pública da Arábia Saudita e, simultaneamente, para divergir a atenção dos media ocidentais dos problemas de direitos humanos existentes neste país; que a Arábia Saudita procura usar o seu vasto poder financeiro para adquirir soft power e, desta forma, tornar-se uma potência liderante no Médio Oriente e no mundo. A dissertação conclui, ainda, que o que tem ocorrido entre 2016 e 2022 na Arábia Saudita é a prática de sportswashing, mascarada de sports diplomacy, utilizando o afeto das massas pelo desporto para normalizar as práticas contra os direitos humanos. | pt_PT |
| dc.description.abstract | This master's thesis, developed in the scientific area of International Relations and diplomatic studies, seeks to contribute positively to the study of the use of sport in Middle Eastern foreign policy, analyzing Saudi Arabia's commitment to sports diplomacy between 2016 and 2022. In this sense, from a constructivist perspective, and following a mostly qualitative methodology, it analyses: firstly, sport as a foreign policy tool and its exploitation by authoritarian regimes such as Qatar and the United Arab Emirates; secondly, how Saudi Arabia has increased its international influence through sport, highlighting the sociological factor between fans and sport; and the investments made by the Saudi Public Investment Fund in international sport, despite the little focus that sport has in the Saudi Vision 2030 strategy. The dissertation discusses the concepts of sportswashing and sports diplomacy in Saudi Arabia, confronting them, and seeking to contribute to a topic little explored in the academic field. From the analysis, it is concluded that: Saudi Arabia also uses sport as a foreign policy tool, like other Arab Gulf States such as Qatar and the United Arab Emirates; that sport is used to improve the public image of Saudi Arabia and, at the same time, to divert the attention of Western media from the human rights problems in this country; that Saudi Arabia seeks to use its vast financial power to acquire soft power and, in this way, become a leading power in the Middle East and the world. The dissertation also concludes that what has been happening between 2016 and 2022 in Saudi Arabia is sportswashing, masked as sports diplomacy, using the people´s affection for sport to normalize practices against human rights. | pt_PT |
