Emotional Regulation is the ability to monitor, evaluate and modify emotional reactions to achieve one's goals. Emotion regulation difficulties are associated with different Psychopathological Problems, both externalizing and internalizing, in children and adolescents. This study intends to explore the role of Emotional Regulation in children and adolescents' Externalizing and Internalizing Problems. In addition, given the importance of the role of parents in the development of their children's emotional skills and the scarcity of studies that analyze parental influence mechanisms, we also examine the mediating role of children's emotional regulation in the relationship between parental emotional regulation and psychopathological problems of children/adolescents. The sample consists of 151 children and adolescents who attend public schools from the 3rd to the 9th grade and their parents. The children/adolescent completed a sociodemographic questionnaire and two self-report scales: the Self-Perception of Self-Regulation Skills Scale for Children and the Revised Child Anxiety and Depression Scale. In addition, parents completed the Parent Emotion Regulation Scale and the Skills and Difficulties Questionnaire. The main results suggest a negative association between the child's Emotional Regulation and Psychopathological Problems, both Externalizing and Internalizing. It was also found an indirect effect, in which the Emotional Regulation of the parents influences the Externalizing Problems of the children through the Emotional Regulation of the Child. Thus, a child's lower ability to regulate emotions is associated with more Psychopathological Problems, which suggests that emotional (dys)regulation is a transdiagnostic factor for different Psychopathological Problems. In conclusion, the present study indicates Emotional Regulation as a central construct to perceive and intervene in psychopathological problems in childhood and adolescence.
