Narrative medicine and the medical humanities are increasingly gaining an extremely important role in the context of the established relationship between patients and healthcare professionals. Still, the narrative that the patient presents is often overlooked in decision-making and patients are only seen based on their illness and not as human beings who should be heard and included in order to establish stable and reliable relationships. In the book Somebody That I Used To Know, Wendy Mitchell, who has been diagnosed with early dementia, portrays her memories of early and intermediate stages of the disease, including the difficulties and the adaptations she had to face after the diagnosis as well as the relationships she developed with several healthcare professionals, which sometimes proved to be challenging because she didn’t feel seen and heard beyond her illness. Since a solid support base from healthcare professionals is crucial for a longer maintenance of quality of life in an autonomous environment, the methodology of this dissertation is based on the analysis of studies conducted in several Universities where participants were equipped with key tools of Medical Humanities and Narrative Medicine, such as close reading and active listening, we can see that in general it has led to the development of a renewed sense of awareness, both in terms of the importance of the shared decision-making process and of the patient's vision. We can conclude that the training of the various healthcare actors should not only include scientific topics, but also courses in which students can practice the kind of communication and approach they should have towards patients. Considering that community pharmacists are a bridge between patients and the National Health System, it is important that they have access to practical information that they can provide to patients and their caregivers so that their daily life is easier, including included all aspects that are important for maintaining the patient’s well-being, such as taking the right medication.
