Abstract: This thesis offers an analytical study of the concept of draft in art, taking Charles Baudelaire's critical essays as a starting point for further in-depth analysis. After refusing accounts based on formal proprieties, the thesis suggests a mode of description rested on a particular understanding of intention, which is entailed by some uses of drafts. They are thus described as intentional and incomplete plans, numerically distinct from works of art and conceived before works being published, though teleologically linked to them. The final aim of the thesis is to analyse the consequences of such description to literary and artistic criticism, and not to put forth a normative theory of drafts.
