António Arroio was, in the end of the XIXth century and beginnings of the XXth century, one of the major defenders of technical teaching in Portugal. Inspector of the Industrial schools, his work was characterized by the interventions that he made in several Industrial Schools. Arroio presented proposals to the reorganization of the technical teaching, trying to approach it to examples that he observed in other countries in Europe. Defender of the autonomy of schools and its conjugation with the Industrial context where they were placed, he also had an important role concerning the specificity of the Decorative Art’s in relation to the Industrial teaching, namely the importance of drawing that was traduced in his proposal for the creation of a Decorative Arts school
