Esta dissertação tem como objectivo analisar como interpretar o conceito de ‘palavras inúteis’ no teatro
estático de Maurice Maeterlinck. Pretende-se, em primeiro lugar, fazer uma comparação entre o teatro
aristotélico e o teatro estático de Maeterlinck. Em segundo lugar, faz-se uma comparação entre a
linguagem poética de Artaud e a linguagem inútil de Maeterlinck para compreender como as ‘palavras
inúteis’ formam a base de compreensão no teatro estático. Finalmente, interpreta-se o modo como as
palavras inúteis funcionam no sistema de comunicação no teatro estático com o exemplo da peça Les
Aveugles.
This thesis aims to analyze how to interpret the concept of ‘useless words’ in the static theater of Maurice Maeterlinck. Firstly, a comparison is made between the Aristotelic theater and the static theater. Secondly, an interpretation of how the anti-Aristotelian theater forms a basis of understanding the concept of ‘useless words’ is put forth through a comparison between the poetic language of Artaud and the useless language of Maeterlinck. Finally, with the example of the play Les Aveugles, this thesis explains how useless words work in the communication system of the static theater.
