No actual contexto de globalização económica e da Economia Baseada no Conhecimento, a tecnologia tornou-se um factor estratégico de crescimento e competitividade externa. O processo produtivo é um processo de base científica e o esforço em Investigação e Desenvolvimento (I&D) é um dos inputs básicos da capacidade inovadora das estruturas produtivas. A I&D é uma das principais fontes de produção de conhecimento por parte das unidades produtivas. A medida do esforço financeiro em I&D (intensidade em I&D) traduz a intensidade tecnológica dessa produção. Este trabalho tem como ponto de partida a necessidade de classificar e caracterizar a estrutura económica do país, em termos de intensidade tecnológica e da sua competitividade externa. O principal objectivo é concluir acerca de algum tipo de relação entre a intensidade tecnológica e o desempenho económico da estrutura produtiva nacional, em especial no que se refere às indústrias intensivas em tecnologia e aos Serviços Intensivos em Conhecimento.
In the actual context of economic globalisation and of the Knowledge Based Economy, technology became a strategic factor for growth and external competitiveness. The production process is science based and the investment in Research and Development (R&D) is one of the basic inputs of the innovation capacity. R&D is one of the main sources of knowledge production, or of technology production, by the production units. This effort in investing on R&D reflects the technology intensity of the production. The present works is based on the need of classifying and characterize the economic structure of Portugal in terms of its technology intensity and its external competitiveness. The main objective of this task is to conclude on the existence of any relation between the technology intensity and the economic performance of the national production structure, especially to what concerns to the technology based industries and to the Knowledge Intensive Business Services.
