Abstract(s)
This paper presents data concerning the Iron Age occupation of the Castel of São Jorge´s hilltop (Lisbon, Portugal), obtained during a series of preventive excavations carried out in Rua do Recolhimento/Beco do Leão. The artifacts recovered are framed in a wide chronology, stretching from the late 8th / early 7th century BC to the arrival of the first Roman military contingents to the Tagus estuary, in the late 2nd century BC. It encompasses a considerable variety of ceramic categories, among which stand out the red slip ware, gray pottery, amphorae, painted ceramics, common ware, and handmade productions, all of which produced in the Tagus estuary, most likely within the limits of the ancient Olisipo. These data allow us to make some considerations concerning the earliest Iron Age traces identified in this important site and its evolution across the 1st millennium BC.
