When investigating the advantages of parental involvement on student achievement, the identification by the teachers o f the existence oi""hard-to-reach parents'' (Davies et ai, 1989; Heleen, 1988) challenges the researcher in his/her will to promote the involvement of the latter on their children's educational process. On the other hand, given that literacy is currently considered essential for the school and social performance, the role of parents seems to be quite important. This study investigates how one can affect the Iheracy acquisition of immigrant children from minority background in Portugal, both by modifying the attitudes and practices of their families towards school and towards the quantity and quality of literacy events, and by increasing their cultural references. Using the case study research methodology we selected two Primary Schools in the metropolitan Lisbon area. A great number of students in one school came from African origin and in the other school from Indian origin. In both schools the students belonged to low socioeconomic status families. The sample for each school was composed of all the first year students belonging to the respective minority. Each sample was divided in t w o groups, the test group and the control group. After characterizing the attitudes and expectations of the parents, and the literacy development of the children, we were able to choose the adequate intervention to target the students and families o f the test groups. In addition to obtaining important differences between the minorities, it was also possible to develop strategies which promoted the involvement of parents whose structural characteristics were of ""hard-to-reach parent^'. Their influence in the literacy development of the children (in the particular case of the African minority, the influence of the older siblings) seems to be a powerful resource to be used in reducing the high rate o f failure, which is now common among the minority students in Portugal.
