(M=43.46; DP=12.675).
The beliefs that people have influence their way of being and acting in face of everyday situations and contexts, namely the beliefs about the role of parents in the lives of their children, the school and their interaction. The role of parents in the learning and school success of children and young people is very important, since their first contact with reading and writing is at home. The writing process is essential for learning and various everyday tasks as well as for a good communication with others. Beliefs about the relationship between the role of parents and these processes require further reflection, due to insufficient studies in this area. Thus, this exploratory study aims to develop an instrument to understand what beliefs the community at large and the educational community have about the role of parents in the learning and success of their children in writing and at school. The valid sample analyzed is 400 female (n=335) and male (n=62) participants (3 missing), aged between 18 and 86 years (M=43.46; SD=12.675). The instrument presents good psychometric qualities. After the principal components analysis, 63 items were selected, distributed over the four extracted components. These focus on: the role of family activities for learning to write; the relationship between school success and parent-child similarities; parental involvement for success at school; and the role of parents vs. the role of the school in children and young people's learning.
