Abstract(s)

This dissertation was written under the scope of the master’s degree in Contemporary Typographic and Editorial Practices. It focuses on exploring the designer’s ability to use methods initially developed for other disciplines, in its own field of expertise. The investigation was carried out according to a mixed methodology, initially interventionist and later, non-interventionist, according to which an editorial project was developed. In order to contextualize the research, it was essential to start with a literature review, crossing multiple areas: Communication Design, Social Design, Editorial Design and Ethnography. Over a period of six months, personal and professional skills were developed in the context of the Erasmus + program’s mobility. The immersive contact in a new culture, allowed the creation of an environment conducive to cultural experimentation, which culminated in a series of interviews with Italian women (mostly matriarchs of the family), and the collection of stories about their lives and educations. Finally, following the principles and concepts obtained through applied research and active and practical research, a book of stories and recipes was designed. In order to assess the possible connection between design and ethnography, this project also had the purpose of, through the editorial object associated with it, creating a cultural conservation channel, focused on Italian cuisine
